Chronic pain is more than just a lingering ache. It is a complex, exhausting condition that can be a life altering reality that many people face every day. A pain that goes beyond normal healing time, often lasting months or even years. According to research, between 10%-20% of people deal with this struggle. Chronic pain can be persistent, causing a knock on not only physical discomfort, but emotional and psychological wellbeing - a constant, invisible companion.
At Caroline Swart Physiotherapy in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth), we understand that chronic pain is not solely caused by tissue damage alone, but a complex combination of physical, emotional, and social factors. On the bright side: with the correct help and guidance, pain can be managed, and a normal happy life is possible.
The traditional idea that “pain=damage” needs a new and fresh approach.
Pain is shaped by our nervous system, beliefs, mood, stress level and environment. Many people get trapped in the cycle of pain-avoidance, stiffness and weakness. Here at Caroline Swart Physiotherapy, we use the “top-down and bottom-up” method, which changes how we think about pain and how we can move and gently retrain the body and brain.
Here at Caroline Swart Physiotherapy, with over 25 years of experience, we use our evidence- based methods and compassionate care to help each client, and our chronic pain management methods are tailor made. Here’s how we work:
Pain education. By helping the client understand their nervous system and the possible causes of their pain, we can find an effective solution to manage it.
Graded movement and exercise. Starting off slow with gentle exercises that will gradually improve strength, flexibility and overall confidence within movement.
Behavioural and lifestyle changes. Placing and emphasis on improving sleep habits, stress – management, identifying effective coping strategies, and learning mindfulness techniques, are often key tools in improving chronic pain.
Collaborative goal setting. Working together on meaningful goals (such as returning to old hobbies or even walking without fear) shifts the focus from the idea of having no pain, to living a functional and fulfilling life.
Tailored care. At Caroline Swart Physiotherapy, we focus on your individual journey, goals and pace to get you moving with confidence again.
Chronic pain not only affects you physically, but can have a tremendous impact on your mood, relationships, work, identity and sleep patterns. By moving the focus from “targeting and fixing damage” to “rebuilding and relearning”, we offer a more effective and hopeful journey forward.
If you are struggling with persistent pain, swallowed in a circle of frustration and fatigue, please know that help is available. Our team at Caroline Swart Physiotherapy would be glad to help you through a journey of rediscovering movement and joy once more.
