What to Expect at Your First Physiotherapy Appointment

If you are starting your physiotherapy for the first time, it is completely normal to feel unsure about what to expect. Physiotherapy is not only for post-operative recovery; it is equally beneficial for everyday aches, pains, stiffness and movement concerns.

At Caroline Swart Physiotherapy in Port Elizabeth, our first appointments are designed to be thorough, supportive and tailored to your individual needs.

Your Initial Assessment

Your first session will begin with a detailed conversation. Your physiotherapist will ask about your symptoms, daily activities, work environment, exercise habits and general health history. This helps identify factors that may be contributing to pain or discomfort, whether that is poor posture, repetitive strain, stress or reduced activity levels.

You will also discuss your personal goals, such as moving more comfortably, returning to exercise or sport, improving strength or managing ongoing pain.

Physical Examination

A physical assessment will follow, focusing on how your body moves and functions. This may include checking posture, joint mobility, muscle strength, flexibility and movement patterns. You may be asked to perform simple movements such as walking, squatting or reaching.

All assessments are conducted professionally and within your comfort level, with clear explanations provided throughout.

Your Personalised Treatment Plan

Once the assessment is complete, your physiotherapist will explain their findings and outline a treatment plan tailored specifically to you, your needs and goals. Treatment may include hands-on therapy, guided exercises, movement retraining and practical advice to support your daily activities.

Physiotherapy often focuses on addressing the root cause of pain, not just the symptoms, helping prevent issues from becoming long-term problems.

What to Wear and Bring

Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely. If you have any relevant medical reports or scans, you are welcome to bring them along.

Supporting Long-Term Movement and Confidence

Physiotherapy is suitable for people of all activity levels, whether you are recovering from surgery or simply want to move better and feel stronger. Early intervention can make a significant difference.

At Caroline Swart Physiotherapy, the focus is on restoring movement, reducing pain and helping you feel confident in your body at whatever stage of recovery or wellness you are in.
